Our Story

Sixty years ago, when Lighthouse of Pinellas was formed, blindness and low vision were rare conditions in the United States. Most people didn’t know anyone within their circle of friends or family with vision impairment.

Today, that fact is quite different. As life expectancy increases and the largest generation in history is aging, the National Eye Institute predicts that one in three Americans over the age of 65 will be faced with a vision-impairing eye disease. Couple that with a dramatic increase in the survival rate of premature babies, it’s not surprising that vision impairment is on the rise.

Lighthouse of Pinellas has grown and adapted to the changing and increasing population of people with blindness and low vision. We are accredited by the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER). And, our team of professionals are experts in the field of visual impairments, many of whom have Master’s Degrees in Visual Disabilities and national certifications in their area of specialty.

Our services are not just for seniors or people who are completely blind.

As a matter of fact, only 10% of our clients have no vision at all. If your vision impairment hinders your ability to learn, perform daily activities, live independently and/or obtain or maintain employment, you are likely eligible for our services.

We understand how difficult it is to acknowledge you are losing your sight. You may fear losing your independence, being placed in assisted care or giving up your favorite hobby. You don’t have to live with this fear. Lighthouse of Pinellas provides professional, proven training to help people of all ages adjust to their vision loss, learn new ways to do what they need to do and want to do, and have the confidence to remain active, productive and as independent as possible.

Take time to get to know us here on the website. Then, call us. We have over 60 years’ experience helping people just like you.
