For most people, employment provides a sense of purpose, belongingness and a feeling of satisfaction that comes from being a contributing member of a community. Yet, most individuals who are blind or visually impaired are not employed. Lighthouse of Pinellas (LHP) understands the value of having a job when a person has a disability, well beyond the monetary benefits.

That’s why LHP partners with the Florida Division of Blind Services (DBS) to offer the agency’s Vocational Rehabilitation Program to Pinellas County residents who meet DBS eligibility requirements. The program helps people with vision loss train for and gain employment. And, it also assists those who are losing their vision in their adult years to retain their current job.

Eligibility

Participants must have the presence of a bilateral (in both eyes) visual impairment, the ability to benefit from training and a strong desire and commitment to gain or retain employment. Also, clients are required to apply for this program through the Florida Division of Blind Services and are then referred to Lighthouse of Pinellas. LHP staff is available to answer questions and provide assistance with that process.

Job Readiness Training & Job Placement Services

Job Development services are provided through an individualized plan based on the client’s employment goals and abilities. Services may include training in:

• Access Technology Software – instruction that allows people who are visually impaired or blind to use computers just like their sighted peers
• iPhones and iPads – teaching clients how to access features in their devices that allow them to use these tools despite their vision loss
• Low Vision Aids – training to use aids or appliances that may be needed to help clients perform their job duties such as CCTVs, scanners, magnifiers, etc.
• Coaching – in creating cover letters and resumes, using online job search tools and developing interview skills
• Job Placement – Assistance and coaching in the process of looking for appropriate positions

Clients receiving job placement services also have access to other classes and instruction designed to maximize their independence and ability to maintain a job. Those services include:

• Independent Living Skills classes
• Orientation & Mobility services
• Braille instruction
• Coping with Loss classes
