We teach adults who have lost their sight later in life, the skills they need to become self-sufficient in doing the things they need to do, as well as do the things they want to do.

Certified vision rehabilitation therapists provide instruction so individuals are able to re-learn common activities of daily living and gain a greater level of independence.

Independent Living Skills

Independent Living Skills classes help our clients overcome barriers to living life independently. Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapists, along with staff in other specialty areas teach clients new ways to cook, clean, manage money, organize their home, care for themselves and so much more. Lighthouse staff also provides instruction in safe travel techniques, self-advocacy and adjustment counseling. Classes are held for three hours, once a week for six weeks. Clients graduate with renewed confidence in their ability to live safely and independently.

Orientation & Mobility Training

Discover new techniques for traveling independently and safely, problem solving and accessing public transportation. This training works to ensure individuals are oriented with their home, work and community surroundings and can be safe and confident travelers. Learn to use a white cane, cross streets safely and independently, access public transportation and prerequisite skills needed to obtain a guide dog.

Computer & Technology Training

Our team of specialists provides training on a number of devices to help individuals with vision impairments live life to the fullest. There’s no reason to give up your computer because of vision loss. Learn to use magnifying and/or screen-reading software to confidently navigate the Windows Operating System, master keyboarding and use word processing programs, email and surf the internet.

Lighthouse technology instructors also teach clients with little or no vision to use access technology in iPhones and iPads.

Coping with Vision Loss

Vision loss is devastating. People who lose their sight may experience both physical and emotional changes that can affect their personal well-being. Coping with Loss classes at Lighthouse of Pinellas help in the transition, recovery and adjustment to living with vision impairment. Coping classes also teach stress management, problem-solving and self-advocacy techniques and address anger, depression and other common concerns associated with low vision or blindness.

Low Vision Training

Certified Low Vision Rehabilitation Therapists at Lighthouse of Pinellas conduct low vision assessments and provide a wide variety of training in these areas:

  • Visual skills training to maximize use of remaining vision
  • Training in the use of adaptive equipment to meet your reading and writing goals
  • Recommendations for lighting and environmental adaptations to improve safety in the home
