Kailea’s Story

KaileaKailea came to the Lighthouse of Pinellas when she was six months old.

Learning their daughter was both blind and deaf, Kailea’s parents wondered, “How will we communicate with her? Will she ever learn to walk without the motivation most children have to reach the toy on the floor if she can’t see it?”

Once enrolled in the Lighthouse of Pinellas’ Early Intervention program, Kailea’s parents were taught how to help her learn to communicate, walk and pickup toys.

Early in their training, the Lighthouse of Pinellas Early Intervention program specialist discovered Kailea did in fact have some vision. This knowledge helped them to empower Kailea to use her remaining vision.

She is now able to walk independently down hallways, differentiate between objects and recognize people.
