Rene Espinoza, CEO of LazarilloApp is developing a smart phone app that aims to improve navigational experience for the blind and visually impaired. Lighthouse of Pinellas Mobility specialist, Karli Davis, has been working with the app designer, to map out the Lighthouse facility so that the technology may someday be used in the organization’s Largo teaching facility.
This supplemental tool to gives the user directions and information about what is around them while navigating to their destinations. For example, it provides landmarks like businesses and even ATMs.
“This technology is a great supplement to a white cane or guide dog. But it does not replace the problem-solving skills we teach for people to be as aware as they can of their surroundings. The user must have orientation and mobility proficiency and is required to possess advanced smart phone skills.”
