Teen Transition Program

(Ages 14 – HS Graduation)

When our teens graduate from high school, we want them to be empowered for success in college, careers, and life on their own.

Our Transition Program is designed to equip visually impaired young adults with the skills and knowledge needed to be prepared for life after high school. The program’s goal is to ensure participating students transition successfully into college, technical school, employment, and living independently.

Our Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) provide large- and small-group instruction on the skills each student needs to accomplish their post-secondary goals. Instruction is provided in all nine areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum for Students with Visual Impairments.

During the school year, the Transition Program meets once a week and two Saturdays every month.  Services during the school year target building skills in the areas of independent living, self-advocacy, assistive technology (including touch typing), and recreation and leisure.

During the months of June and July, we provide a 4- to 5-week intensive Summer Program, with onsite instruction and activities; community fieldtrips focusing on career exploration, independent community travel, and recreation activities; and work experiences with community business partners.

“I learned how to live on my own: cook for myself, clean and do laundry. The teachers helped us look at different careers, write resumes, search for a job and interview.”
